The poem reads:
Somewhere in the space of life
You meet a friend, just once or twice.
Your life becomes an open book
And as this stranger takes a look
You begin to see.
You see yourself, your virtues clear
You see your detriments appear,
All this accepted without cause,
Gives hearts a chance for real applause,
No hypocrisy.
Friendship once a gift of God,
Friendship always very odd
Accept it quickly while you live,
Give it all you have to give,
It will set you free.
Dedicated to one of life's greatest joys
True friendship
Elise G. King
This poem was written by my mother. As she lay dying, one of her final wishes was to have a card made that she could send to all her friends.
Using some pretty basic computer graphics tools available in 1992, I set off in good faith to meet her wishes. She wanted a purple rose, I gave her a purple rose. I showed her the final proof and sent it off to the printer and asked for the fastest turnaround possible.
The 5000 cards arrived the day she passed away. She never saw them. While we did use them to send thank you notes to all her friends and I have used a handful or two to express my gratitude for my special friendship there are thousands left. As I thought about the deeper meaning of friendships, I suddenly recognized that her feelings about friendships are indeed implanted my bones! There is no mistaking about it.Â
So in memory of our special friendships with our mothers, in memory of those special "soul bonds" we might have with another, these cards are now available for purchase, as was the original plan in 1992, with the proceeds going to cancer research, also part of the original plan.
